Are You There?

Are You There?
Sinking into the abyss of dementia,
Where everyone is your best friend,
Where everyone is a stranger.
Alone in a crowd.
Looking ahead and seeing nothing
But the back of the door.
On the ceiling above the bed
Flies a circle of light,
From the bedside table?
Wondering where you are
When you are there already.
Going nowhere, waiting.
Striving for nothing,
All is an illusion.
So, now, is it transitory?
All the years spent doing,
bringing, picking up, cooking, fixing,
Feeling, striving.
Lying there, alone,
With a circle of light
Shining on the ceiling,
Above the bed.
Then turning, to find a stranger,
Or is it a friend?
Someone known, unknown, unknowing.
Wondering where your are
Where you are going,
When you are there already.
