Love and Loss

Just when you think you have dotted all the “i’s” and crossed all the “t’s” and your relationship is on solid ground, just when you think you have trained all the dragons and drained all the moats, when the script is written, the skies are safe,

and the ground has been cleared of land mines…

…that’s when it all falls apart!

Why?

Because you have stopped trying?

Because all the challenges have been met?

Or is it because...

Someone dies?

Or a divorce is initiated?

A job is lost?

Or a child falls into a pit of their own making?

Then the dragons take to the skies, the moats fill with water, and the script is burned!

Your stomach becomes an aching hole and will not fill with food.

You long for sleep and seek it, but wake to find the crisis has not disappeared.

Problems loom large and appear unsolvable.

That is the moment when love and loss are palpable.

Problems are never solved and relegated to the realm of the unattended.

Scripts are never completely edited.

Dragons are prone to revolt.

Moats fill with water from a hidden spring.

And there is always another mine to be located.

That is the moment when you realize that you can never stop trying, paying attention, and making an effort.

That is the moment when you realize that striving applies to all that you experience: your relationship, your parenthood, your job, your very existence.

The Garden of Eden is not your home.

Thank you, Eve, for the knowledge.
