What the World Needs Now

What is it that the world needs now?

Why is it that we cry at weddings? Hope? The dawn of possibilities? A look into the future? The expression of love?

Why do we cry at funerals? Because of loss? For goals achieved and still unmet? For memories? Because there is a giant ache where love is?

Why do we cry at graduations? Out of pride? Achievement of a responsibility? Thankfulness? For possibilities? Out of love for the graduate?

Why do we cry at tragedies or in the face of suffering? Anguish? For expectations unrealized? For that ache where love is. Out of love for those who suffer?

What is the common factor that inspires these tears? It is love in some form!

Are we doing a disservice if we ever discourage the expression of emotion, be it love or any other emotion? Do we force the “There’s something in my eye!” to hide the recognition of emotion? We need to be able to say instead “There’s something in my heart!” and let the emotion out! Internalized it goes to … where? Repression? Disease? Anxiousness? Stress? Excess emotion can be expressed in other ways, or in other emotions entirely, like hate, or fear.

We can teach ourselves and our children to fully feel, be it for good or ill. Once felt, it can be dealt with. Expressed emotion can be empowering, draw out our strengths, and resolve issues.

There are song lyrics that state “What the world needs now, is love, sweet love." It was true when written by Jackie DeShannon and released in 1965. What was true then is true now.

Recently a wise man told me we were all roommates. We are. Roommates sharing with all the plants, animals and people with whom we share the air, the soil and the water. As roommates we are responsible to one another. We invest in our shared environment every minute of every day. We can seek to understand the emotions and expressions of our roomies!

Apply that common emotion and sharing that can be felt at every birth, wedding, funeral, graduation and event to our everyday interactions. The result will be exactly what the world needs now.
